Last weekend we piled into the car and set out on a magical mystery tour.
Heading towards Edinburgh, we soon found ourselves driving through the seaside resorts of East Lothian. We stopped in the pretty little village of Gullane and after a brisk walk along the sandy beach stumbled upon Falko.
This German-style café is the brainchild of Falko Burkert, native of Stuttgart and authentic, card-carrying master pastry chef (“Konditormeister”). We were tempted through the door by the array of artisan cakes and pastries on offer. The mister selected cherry and almond kuchen (pastry filled with Morello cherries and fresh vanilla cream custard), while I tucked into a slab of plum kuchen. Our cakes were so delicious that we couldn’t help wondering whether we should make a permanent move to Gullane (although there’s also a branch of Falko in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh).
