Time to fly the nest

This morning I spotted an apprehensive little face peeking out of the nest box in our back garden. Clearly, the time had come to take a massive leap of faith and launch into the big blue yonder…

Mrs and Mrs Great Tit came to view our nest box a few weeks ago. Liking what they saw, they moved straight in and made themselves at home. In no time at all, their new house was crammed full of noisy little chicks.

Watching the adult birds zip back and forth across the garden with food for their voracious offspring became a daily must-see event. It certainly made doing the washing-up a less onerous task. But we never guessed that we would be lucky enough to catch the babies as they fledged. I counted five chicks leave the nest today, some with rather more confidence than others.

Watching each tiny bird squeeze out of the nest box and take flight for the first time was an amazing experience and one that I feel privileged to have witnessed. Nature is certainly a wonderful thing.

Prone to magpie tendencies, I enjoy nothing more than musing – in pictures and in words – on a few of my favourite things.
