Penguins start riot at Scottish zoo

It seems that the penguins at Edinburgh Zoo are a little hacked off by all the attention lavished on giant pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang (AKA ‘Sweetie’ and ‘Sunshine’). The pandas arrived on loan from China last December, causing mass hysteria and a proliferation of panda-related puns by members of the Scottish media. Yes, people, it was panda-monium…

The poor penguins are accustomed to being the star attraction at the zoo—what with their daily parade around the grounds and a prominent position at the heart of the official logo—but they’ve been rudely pushed out of the limelight by the corpulent creatures from Asia. So annoyed were the Rockhopper penguins at becoming mere supporting artistes that they took matters into their own hands, er flippers, and started flinging poo at visitors waiting in line to see the bamboo munchers lurking in the adjacent enclosure. As a consequence, moves are afoot to rehouse the penguins at other zoos until all the fuss dies down (cunningly, the penguins have been told that the move is owing to “essential maintenance” of their pool).

In a statement to the press, a representative of Edinburgh Zoo suggested that the penguins could be suffering from “monochrome jealousy.”

Prone to magpie tendencies, I enjoy nothing more than musing – in pictures and in words – on a few of my favourite things.
