Style icons: a view from the red carpet

Oscar, Bjork and the Swan DressBe it the Oscars, the Baftas, the Grammys, the Brits or indeed any other major awards ceremony, fashion editors and style commentators around the globe are working themselves into a lather over the designer frocks sashaying down the red carpet.

Worshipping at the temple of haute couture is all very well but who really remembers those dresses after a week or so? True awards season style icons understand that you must push the boundaries in order to stand out from the cookie-cutter crowd.

My personal picks for the top 3 style moments from the Oscars red carpet are as follows:

1. Björk (2001). Icelandic singer Björk caused jaws to drop when she arrived with a fake swan draped over what seemed to be an ‘American tan’ bodystocking. For added authenticity, she proceeded to lay an egg while traversing the red carpet.

2. Trey Parker and Matt Stone (2000). The boys behind South Park and Team America: World Police came dressed as J Lo and Gwyneth Paltrow. Very disturbing…

3. Celine Dion (1999). Celine turned up wearing what can only be described as a white tux. Worn back-to-front. With a fedora.

An honourable mention must also go to Helena Bonham-Carter, who always comes dressed as a character from a Tim Burton film.
