Monday to Friday, I enjoy listening to the acts that perform in the Live Lounge on BBC Radio 1.
The concept is simple. Musicians turn up at the iconic Maida Vale Studios in London, where they perform an acoustic version of one of their own songs, followed by a cover. The songs selected for the cover version are often from a totally different genre than the act is widely known for and can come straight out of left field. Leona Lewis wowed the audience back in 2010 with her unexpectedly stripped-back version of Snow Patrol’s Run.
The Live Lounge originally aired on Jo Whiley’s morning show but the baton has since passed to Fearne Cotton.
This week, the Live Lounge has showcased Brit Award ‘British Breakthrough Act’ nominees Anna Calvi, Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sande and The Vaccines. This morning was the turn of fellow nominee Jessie J. She sang her current hit Domino and gave Rhianna’s We Found Love her own spin.
