Scallop

Loved and loathed in equal measure, Maggi Hambling’s sculpture sits on the shingle beach at Aldeburgh. Scallop is dedicated to composer Benjamin Britten, who lived in the town from 1957 until his death in 1976. The text punched in the upright shell—”I hear those voices that will not be drowned”— is taken from his opera Peter Grimes.

Prone to magpie tendencies, I enjoy nothing more than musing – in pictures and in words – on a few of my favourite things.
