It’s official: the UK tour of Legally Blonde–the musical totally rocks.
Based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde follows dizzy sorority girl Elle Woods as she enrolls at Harvard Law in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner, who thinks she is insufficiently serious to be the wife of a future politician (he wants a Jackie not a Marilyn).
On the surface, the show is pink and fluffy but don’t be fooled. Like ‘Miss Woods comma Elle’ herself, Legally Blonde should not be judged by its cover. For starters, the show has won more than enough prestigious awards on both sides of the pond to satisfy even the most snobbish of theatre snobs. The music is memorable; the lyrics witty and smart. Yes, Legally Blonde makes for a fun night out but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find some weighty themes explored. Integrity, sisterhood, friendship, love. And a debunking of the assumptions that we all make about appearance.
In the UK tour, newcomer Faye Brookes is absolutely spot-on as Elle: warm, sympathetic, genuine. Former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon is also worth a shout as unlucky in love hairdresser Paulette.
You may think that pink isn’t your thing. But I urge you to look beyond the blonde and bag a ticket to see this fantastic show. You won’t be disappointed.
